Best 144hz Monitor 1080p Vs 4k: How to Choose the Perfect Gaming Display

We've bought and tested over 260 monitors, and below are our picks for the best monitors with a native refresh rate of 144Hz. See our recommendations for the best 1440p 144Hz monitors, the best 4k 144Hz monitors, and if you want a higher refresh rate, the best 240Hz monitors.

Best 144hz Monitor 1080p Vs 4kl

The best 144Hz monitor we've tested is the LG 32GQ950-B. It's an excellent 4k gaming monitor whose 144Hz native refresh rate you can overclock to 160Hz with an NVIDIA graphics card, but the overclock feature is a bit unstable at times. Regardless, it offers gaming performance with a fantastic response time across its entire refresh rate range and low input lag for a responsive feel. It also has native FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) support to reduce screen tearing, and it's G-SYNC compatible if you want to use it with an NVIDIA graphics card.

If you want a 144Hz monitor on a budget, there are a few good options you can choose from. The LG 27GN650-B is the best budget 144Hz monitor we've tested, and while it has a lower 1080p resolution compared to the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ, that's the trade-off you need to make for getting something cheaper. However, the image clarity is still good. Like the ASUS, it has native FreeSync VRR support to reduce screen tearing and G-SYNC compatibility, but you can't overclock its refresh rate. What makes this such a great option for gaming, despite its budget price, is that it has remarkable motion handling with a fast response time at its max refresh rate and 144Hz.

Our recommendations are based on what we think are the best monitors with a 144Hz refresh rate currently available. They are adapted to be valid for most people, in each price range. Rating is based on our review, factoring in price and feedback from our visitors.

The best 4k 144Hz monitor we've tested is the Samsung LS32BG852NNXGO, commonly known as the Odyssey Neo G8. It's a high-end monitor that a max refresh rate of 240Hz, making it future-proof once technology allows for higher frame rates with 4k games, but until then, it still serves as a fantastic 4k 144Hz gaming monitor. It delivers excellent picture quality because it has a high native contrast ratio, and unlike most monitors, it features Mini LED local dimming. It allows it to display deep blacks with minimal blooming, resulting in great dark room performance, and if you want to use it for HDR gaming, it also gets bright enough to make highlights pop.

In the links section below, we're highlighting the very best Cyber Monday deals on gaming monitors you can still get as of today. We also have a more comprehensive and continuously updated lists of the best monitor deals, best gaming laptop deals and best tech deals overall.

The 1080p, curved monitor also features a 1ms VRB (visual response boost) feature that turns off the backlight or adds a blank image between frames when colors change so fast that you'd notice blur. The monitor also promises 250 nits of brightness, narrow bezels and a 1500R curve.

Right now, Dell has the 32-inch, S3222HG for just $199 (opens in new tab), reduced from $299. This monitor has a 1080p resolution, a 165 Hz refresh rate and promises 350 nits of brightness and 99 percent coverage of the sRGB color gamut.

Normally, when you're spending less than $200 on a gaming monitor, you have to make some significant compromises. However, the only real compromise on the S3222HG is that it only has a 1080p resolution. That's not ideal but, depending on your gaming PC's graphics card, you may not want to play games at above that resolution anyway.

However, as part of Dell's Cyber Monday sales, it is offering the Dell G3223Q 32-inch, 4K gaming monitor for just $599, (opens in new tab) reduced from $799. The 144-Hz G3223Q sits atop our list of the best 4K gaming monitors thanks to its colorful image output, strong build quality and low input lag.

Even with the best of sales, we almost never see a 2K (2560 x 1440) gaming monitor going for less than $200 and, if we do, it's likely not to be one of the best models. But not today; Dell has the 27-inch, 2K Dell S2722DGM monitor for just $189, down from $289. That's a truly excellent monitor -- we gave it 4 stars -- at a price so cheap, you can give it as a gift to one or more relatives without breaking the bank. We just ordered one for my 10 year old son, for example.

Wow! We reported a few days ago that the Dell S3222DGM, which sits atop our list of the best gaming monitors, was being sold at Dell for $279, an all-time low. Now, we're happy to report that the monitor has dropped down to $249 at Best Buy, an all-time low for a display that normally costs around $399 when it's not on sale.

If you like the idea of the Dell S3222DGM but want higher resolution, consider Dell's Dell G3223Q which is 4K with 144 Hz and is on sale for $599 (opens in new tab) (down from $799). That display tops our list of best 4K gaming monitors.

We're in the waning hours of Cyber Monday, but there are still great deals to be had, like this Dell S2721QS that makes an appearance on our list of best budget 4K monitors. This 27-inch panel usually retails for $329 but is on sale for $249.The S2721QS has a 350-nit brightness rating and boasts a 1300:1 contrast ratio. As you can see below, we measured 392 nits of brightness in our detailed benchmarks in our S2721QS review.

The Cyber Monday monitor deals party is over, but the holiday monitor deals afterparty is in full force. Believe it or not, some of the best gaming monitors from Black Friday and Cyber Monday are still available at the same prices.

For example, the Dell S3222DGM, a 32-inch, 165 Hz monitor which sits at the top of our list of the best gaming monitors, is still just $249 (opens in new tab) at Best Buy, reduced from $399. Dell's G3223Q, which is the best 4K gaming monitor, is still just $599 (opens in new tab) at Dell, down from $799. If you want a colorful, 4K monitor that's really made for gaming, Dell has the U2720QM, which was off sale on Cyber Monday, on sale right now for $349 (opens in new tab) (down from $550 or so).

We won't be adding new deals to this live blog, but please check out our continuously-updated list of the best monitor deals for a comprehensive list of all the screen savings on both gaming and non-gaming displays.

We've bought and tested more than 260 monitors, and below are our recommendations for the best monitors with a 4k native resolution available to buy. Check out our recommendations for the best 4k gaming monitors and the best 4k HDR monitors, and the best 4k 144Hz monitors.

The best 4k monitor we've tested is the Samsung LS32BG852NNXGO. It's an excellent overall 32-inch monitor that's remarkable for different uses. It offers features for gaming, watching movies, or simply browsing the web, so get this if you want the best all-around performance. It delivers excellent picture quality thanks to its Mini LED backlighting that provides a decent full-array local dimming feature, which means it displays deep blacks next to bright highlights, and there's minimal blooming. It makes it a great choice for dark room viewing, and even in well-lit rooms, it easily gets bright enough to fight glare.

If you aren't a gamer and want to save money by getting a 4k monitor with many features, then a mid-range option like the Dell U2723QE is a great choice. As it's targeted only for productivity, you don't get the same gaming features as the Gigabyte M32U, like a high refresh rate or HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, so if you're into competitive gaming, it's best to stick with the Gigabyte. Although it has a smaller 27-inch screen, it's still big enough to open two windows next to each other. You can also get the 32-inch Dell U3223QE, but it costs more for little difference in performance.

As 4k monitors are becoming more accessible, if you're looking for the best budget 4k monitor, you can find some 4k displays for a cheaper cost. Most of the monitors in this price range are basic 4k displays geared toward office use and are meant for people who want the extra text clarity of a 4k monitor. That's the case with the Dell S2721QS, a simplified version of the Dell S2722QC that costs less. You don't get any USB-C inputs, which means you'll need to use an adapter if your laptop only has USB-C and not HDMI, but that's normal in this price range and the trade-off you have to make for getting something cheaper.

Our recommendations are based on what we think are the best monitors with a 4k resolution that are currently available. They are adapted to be valid for most people, in each price range. Rating is based on our review, factoring in price and feedback from our visitors.

For those of us who game, you might be wondering what's the best cable to use to achieve a 144hz refresh rate. There are various cables you can use, but you should pay close attention to the version of your output port and that of your monitor.

To get 144Hz, you should ideally use DisplayPort as it's the most capable out of the bunch. Here, DisplayPort 1.0-1.1a is able to output 144Hz at 1080p, while 1.2-1.2a can output 1440p at 144Hz, 1.3 outputs up to 120Hz at 4K, and 1.4 can output 144Hz at 4K using Display Stream Compression (DSC). It's the best connection to display 144Hz.

If you want to get 144Hz at 1080p out of an HDMI port, you'll need to ensure that you've got access to an HDMI 2.0 port on both your monitor and graphics card. If your graphics card or monitor are relatively old, chances are, you're using version 1.4 or below, where you'll have a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz at 1080p. This is where DVI comes in handy, as it's able to achieve 144Hz at 1080p. 2ff7e9595c
